Occasional problems on this vehicle are failures of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor, Ignition Coils (1.8L and 2.8L engines only) and the Water Pump (1.8L, 2.0L and 2.8L engines only). The cost to replace the MAF Sensor is estimated at $194.00 to $380.00 for parts, depending on the engine, and $33.00 for labor. The cost to replace the Ignition Coils is estimated at $23.00 for each coil and $65.00 for total labor. The cost to replace the Water Pump is estimated at $90.00 for parts and $208.00 for labor. The cost to repair the Intake Manifold is $10.00 for parts and $150.00 for labor. All prices are estimates based on $65.00 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax.

The VW 1.8t engine has an oil sludge problem, even when the manf’s oil changes are followed! 1). The oil pump pick up clogs & starves the engine of oil = $10,000 engine failure. 2). The turbo oil lines coke shut = $2k-$5k turbo replacement. 3). Top side of the engine sludges and at a minimum smokes the $1500 cam chain tensioner. (BTW, the 1.8t has BOTH a timing belt and timing chain!)
1.8t engines have an ignition coil pack problem. Mis fires lead to fouled 02 sensors and catalytic converters. Often mis-diagnosed this can cost you $500 to $2000 for each trip to the dealer!
